A local guru told her parents the teenager possessed ill-luck and that marrying a man would bring destruction to the family and her community. The baffled dog, Sheru, was brought to the wedding in a chauffeur driven car and welcomed by revellers.Mangli, who has not been to school, said she was not happy to wed a dog, but insisted that it will help change her fortunes. Late P’Harcourt doctor’s sister tests positive for Ebola

<div class="MsoNormal"> The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has put the total number of confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria at 18. The 18th patient, according to the Federal Government, is the sister of the late Port Harcourt doctor who died of the EVD recently.</div> <div class="MsoNormal"> A statement issued on Wednesday night by his Special Assistant (Media and Communication), Mr. Dan Nwomeh, said the number of cases successfully managed and discharged was eight while the number of deaths from EVD was seven.</div> <div class="MsoNormal"> Chukwu also debunked rumours of EVD cases outside Lagos and Port Harcourt, adding that, “regarding the rumoured case in Zaria, the blood sample has been sent for Ebola testing.”</div>

Ebola: Remaining six contacts of nurse in Enugu now free

<br /> Enugu State Commissioner of Health, Dr George Eze, on Monday said the remaining six persons who had contact with the nurse that treated the late Liberian-American, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, in Enugu, are now free of suspected infection with the Ebola disease.<br /> Several persons were placed under surveillance in Enugu after the nurse, a staff of First Consultants Hospital who was involved in treating the index case, travelled from Lagos to the Coal City.<br /> <br /> <div id="nrelate_flyout_placeholder"> However, the commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Medical Services in the state ministry of health, Dr Ndubuisi Ejeh, at the opening ceremony of a certificate course organised by the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, disclosed that the remaining six persons placed under surveillance as a result of the nurse’s visit have been certified free of the dreaded disease.<br /> The hospital collaborated with the West African College of Nursing to organise the two-week certificate course.<br /> The commissioner also stressed the importance of personal hygiene, adding that there was a need for continued sensitization on the Ebola disease.<br /> In an inaugural lecture, Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Mba Agu Mba, said 62 million, out of 160 million Nigerians, suffer some form of psychiatric condition which require medical attention.<br /> He also disclosed that the World Health Organisation had projected that in 2030, 15 per cent of the global population will be suffering from mental health challenges.<br /> The governor expressed concerns that the current level of human resources and institutional support are not enough to address Nigeria’s mental health needs.<br /> He therefore canvassed greater commitment and revolutionary policies in order to address the problem.<br /> Earlier in an address, the Medical Director of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, Dr. Jojo Onwukwe, said the course was aimed at repositioning the staff for effective service delivery.<br /> </div>

Reptiles invade Govt Girls College in Akwa Ibom

<div style="text-align: justify;"> Parents of students of the Federal Government Girls College, Ikot Obio Itong, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, have criticised the Federal Government over the invasion of the college’s dormitory by snakes.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> It was learnt that the continued invasion of reptiles in the hostess is due to thick bushes covering the back of the dormitory. Besides, deep holes which are caused by the opening of the ground, are said to have provided habitation for snakes, especially as grasses grow on top of the hostels’ roofs.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A parent and member of Parent Teacher Association of the college, Mr. Bassey Eyo, said the deplorable state of infrastructure in the college is a cause for concern.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He revealed that the development was caused by long neglect of the college by the federal government.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Eyo told our correspondent that the situation is so bad that the principal had to vacate her office which had collapsed and had to take refuge in one of the classrooms she converted to her new office.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “Snakes are natural phenomenon here. Where walls have fallen apart, the college is not properly fenced or fumigated; the place becomes havens for reptiles. My daughter and her friends have often times been complaining of invasion of reptiles in the college.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “Since the inception of the college, first as a teachers’ training college, for more than 40 years, nothing has been added to reflect its new status as a federal government institution for grooming girls.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “Even in your house, when you allow dilapidation to set in, snakes could find a place to live. Look at the structures, the walls, and the hostess, the ground itself has opened up due to long period of neglect of the college.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “The deplorable state of infrastructure in the college, the dormitory, the staff quarters, the principal office, even some classrooms are in terrible state.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “It is hard to imagine that is where government expects to produce future leaders. I am appealing to all the authorities concerned, the FG, who happens to be the proprietor of the school, Niger Delta Development Commission, and Petroleum Education Trust Fund, to assist,” he said.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He stated that parents have done much for the college over the years. He said that the PTA had provided, to a large extent, some facilities like new buildings, adding that there was limit to what the association could do as parents, especially as the school belongs to the FG.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He noted that the FG had done much work to revamp education in the country, asking that the effort should also be extended to the college.</div>

Hassan Katsina Hall, Kawo in Kaduna, the leadership and members of the party in the zone said   Jonathan should   “surrender himself for the continued service to the nation” in 2015.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> But some key   members of the PDP from the zone – the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal;   Governor Sule Lamido (Jigawa); his Katsina counterpart, Shehu Shema; and the Minister of Education , Ibrahim Shekarau were absent from the meeting.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> No reason was given for their action. A source   said the absence of   Lamido   might not be unconnected with his rumoured presidential ambition.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Shema is believed to be interested in   unseating Vice President Namadi Sambo.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> At the meeting   however were the National Chairman of the PDP, Adamu Mu’azu; the National Oganising Secretary,   Abubabkar Mustapha; the zonal Chairman, Amb. Adamu Kazaure; the Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Mukhtar Shagari; and Maj-Gen. Mohammed Magaro (retd); among others.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Mu’azu, in his address, said   the PDP which is as “constant as the northern star,” remained a party to beat and urged members   to be united so as to deliver the zone in 2015.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Kebbi State Governor Usman Dankingari also     said his colleagues would ensure that   the zone   was delivered to the PDP in 2015.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “The zone which is the most sophisticated and populous and other parts of the North will be delivered to the party in 2015,” he added.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali, who read a communique issued at the end of the meeting, said Jonathan had done a lot to deserve a second term from the people of the zone.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Wali,who said   the PDP remained a party to beat under Jonathan, noted   that Nigeria had recorded landmark achievements in all sectors   under the Jonathan administration.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He said the zone would remain grateful to the President, especially in terms of infrastructural development,   good governance and promotion of democracy in the country.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The communiqué read in part, “ Having carefully considered the steady and stable progress of our nation under the able leadership of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the stakeholders of the PDP in the North-West, having in mind the monumental strides attained by this administration, have resolved to ask Dr.   Jonathan to declare for the Presidency in the forthcoming 2015 elections so as to continue the good works he started. We ask for nothing less.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “Consequently, we respectfully call on the national chairman of our party to convey this resolution and unanimous declaration of the entire leadership and membership of the PDP in the North-West to His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, to surrender himself for the continued service to the nation.”</div>
